The circumstantial becomes very substantial in Justine Triet's Palme d'Or-winning drama.
For the past year, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have led a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow outside their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed. Samuel's death is treated as suspicious, presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect.
Little by little the trial becomes not just an investigation of the circumstances of Samuel's death, but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel's conflicted relationship.
Curator's Note
One of the finest films of the year, Anatomy of a Fall arrived via the 76th Cannes Film Festival where it received the coveted Palme d'Or. Directed by Justine Triet who's previous film Sibyl (2019) marked her first collaboration with actor Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall has been heralded as a career best for both actor and director.
Masterful in the way the film is able to quietly build its unique tension, Anatomy of a Fall is gripping and will lure its audience to unexpected places with a seeming effortlessness.
