Celebrating the best films released in Australian cinemas this year.
When the time comes to reflect on film in 2023, the craft that will stand out by far is screenwriting. The writers strike of America has had a significant impact on filmmaking: film production paused, film releases shifted and an industry ground to an abrupt halt. Although the strike took place in the US, ripples have been felt throughout the world in some way, shape or form.
The films able to be released in Australia have changed because of the strike, but the films that made their way to our screens offer a great snapshot of the state of film today, and the enormous writing talent in the film industry.
From films inspired by literature (The Dark Emu Story, Killers of the Flower Moon) to Academy Award-winning writers (Women Talking) to awards season hopefuls (Past Lives, Barbie) we're celebrating the best films of the year and the writers behind them.
