When

Thu 20 Mar 2025

Join multidisciplinary artist and musician Serwah Attafuah for a discussion on her work The Darkness Between the Stars.

Known for creating surreal cyber dreamscapes and Afrofuturistic artworks with contemporary themes, Serwah Attafuah will present a discussion on her work The Darkness Between the Stars, currently on display in ACMI Gallery 3 as the latest Mordant Family Commission.

Attafuah’s multidisciplinary practice includes digital painting, 3D animation, motion capture, digital animations and virtual reality.

In The Darkness Between the Stars, Attafuah weaves past, present and future into an Afrofuturist vision of resilience and reclamation across five screens. Female warriors rise from burning slave castles and shipwrecked colonial vessels, their glitch-patterned kente cloth celebrating Ghana’s matrilineal traditions.

The work explores the intersection of climate change, e-waste, the legacies of the slave trade, land rights and the indomitable spirit of the indigenous peoples of West Africa.
