Explore the creation, storytelling and secrets behind these complex characters with our panel of experts.
What exactly is an anti-hero, and why have they become so popular? What makes these flawed, morally ambiguous characters so compelling, and who gets to be “bad”?
Hosted by Martyn Pedler, this panel features Cienan Muir, founder of INDIGINERD, Professor of Media and Entertainment Angela Ndalianis and writer and critic Brodie Lancaster as they dive into the fascinating world of anti-heroes and why we are so drawn to their complexity.
This event is part of The Anti-Hero Takeover program at ACMI. Celebrate the flawed, complex and morally grey characters who smash the boundaries of traditional heroism. Find out more

Martyn Pedler
Martyn Pedler is a writer and academic, currently completing a creative PhD on superhero stories. He was a film critic until he wrote the arthouse independent feature Exit – which premiered at Montreal's Fantasia Festival back in 2011 – and he realised how hard it is to make a good movie. He now has several film and TV projects in development, both in Australia and the USA. Oh, and he once wrote death monologues for every fatality in the Steven Seagal classic Under Siege.

She also specialises in genre studies, in particular the science-fiction, superhero and horror genres. She is currently writing a book on Batman.
