For Janet Patterson, costume designer on Bright Star, the clothes were designed to play a part in the romance, to create a symmetry and cohesion. The costume that she designed for Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) in Bright Star was one of the highlights of our Hollywood Costume exhibition. Producer Jan Chapman discusses Patterson’s approach to designing the costume and its importance in a pivotal scene in the film. Patterson herself explains using the landscape to inform her design, as well as wanting the characters to look like “a pair of matching bookends”.
