Outliers of the Hollywood Musical

It might feel like the musical genre has been having a rest since the golden age of cinema, but you only need to look at the enormous number of music videos that have been produced - especially since the launch of MTV in 1981 - to realise that it has not. These days, if we count narrative-based music videos, the overwhelming majority that are made are short, snappy and live outside of the Hollywood studio system.
